Dear all,

I recently came across GPLDL at https://gpldl.com. This site redistributes thousands (!) of WordPress Products (Themes & Plugins) which are usually sold by the developers for Free.

In RMS’s words it is both „free“ and „libre“ and obviously a credible source.

Two questions from me:

1. Is this site legit - according to the GNU Public License?

2. Why has there never been any workshop or talk at Libreplanet in the last years on this?

WordPress is by far the most important software powering the Internet it is GNU licensed so redistributing commercial plugins and themes should be a big deal.

Any thoughts from the community on this?

Thanks,

John

Yes, you can get all those free themes and plugins gratis there.
In my view it's a good thing that companies are able to make money
with their free products. If this wouldn't work, they (or someone else)
would still make money – but with proprietary software.

Sure. When you buy a plugin you get the source code licensed under the
GNU GPL, so you have every right to set up a 'free beer'-website and
share it with everyone else.

I'm not sure this is really the best way to support the project, but
that's
another question…

Yes, it's really great that Wordpress is free software :)

Two things I don't like: They use Google Fonts in all default themes,
see [1] and [2]. They use Gravatar (instead of Libravatar for example)
by default [3].

BTW,

Cheers,
Stefan.

While sources[1] at provided for free together or "on demand" with
binaries, and GPL (COPYING file, licence headers) comes with,
there is no restriction.

Regarding scripting languages, there is rarely obfuscated code, so only
missing COPYING file would avoid distribution.

Also, "distributions" are encouraged (Libre distributions are a somewhat
recent fight).

Do it!

How is WordPress the most important software powering the Internet? If
people stop using it, will the internet stop working?

This is an honest question, as I'm curious if you've compared WordPress
with other software-- not saying that WordPress is bad, by the way.

Perhaps a more honest statement would have been: "WordPress is one of
the most important software for publishing websites onto the internet."
That would be more agreeable.

Web. They mean the Worldwide Web. People tend to conflate the internet with the web.

While the web wouldn't "stop working" if WordPress did (only the internet breaking could do that), a vast and important part of it would disappear. So it's fair to say it's the most important software powering the web.
( Yes, I've compared it to other software.)
