This is probably the first issue of the "What's cooking" report, in
which all topics have some sort of description.

That's a small achievement, at least for me.

Even better, each and every topic is annotated with some sort of
verdict (like "Will discard", "Expecting a reroll", "Will merge to
'next'?" etc.). There is no topic in the "Undecided" category when
this report is fed to "cook -w" script (found in the 'todo' branch).

A handful of topics are added to 'next', and we have about 40 topics
cooking there. For them, the future is automated---they spend about
a week in 'next', and if we find issues in them, we incrementally
improve them, or get merged to 'master'.

Then we have about a dozen topics that are marked for 'next' (please
raise your hand if you have objection before a real damage is done),
and 8 more that may be ready for 'next' (please raise your hand if
you want to nudge them in either direction, for or against).

Here are the topics that have been cooking in my tree. Commits
prefixed with '+' are in 'next' (being in 'next' is a sign that a
topic is stable enough to be used and are candidate to be in a
future release). Commits prefixed with '-' are only in 'seen',
which means nothing more than that I have found them of interest for
some reason (like "it may have hard-to-resolve conflicts with
another topic already in flight" or "this may turn out to be
useful"). Do not read too much into a topic being in (or not in)
'seen'. The ones marked with '.' do not appear in any of the
integration branches, but I am still holding onto them.

A few topics for regression fixes have been merged to 'next' and
will be merged to 'master' shortly. There are many topics listed as
"New" that are in 'seen', but I haven't read many of them (and I
shouldn't have anyway, before dealing with regression fixes) and
haven't gave any summary comments in this report, either, yet.

Copies of the source code to Git live in many repositories, and the
following is a list of the ones I push into or their mirrors. Some
repositories have only a subset of branches.

With maint, master, next, seen, todo:

	git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git/
	git://repo.or.cz/alt-git.git/
	https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/git/git/
	https://github.com/git/git/
	https://gitlab.com/git-vcs/git/

With all the integration branches and topics broken out:

	https://github.com/gitster/git/

Even though the preformatted documentation in HTML and man format
are not sources, they are published in these repositories for
convenience (replace "htmldocs" with "manpages" for the manual
pages):

	git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git-htmldocs.git/

reviews other than typofixes in the earliest round, which may or
may not be still relevant. The last round needs a serious review
 before becoming eligible for 'next'.

Many git commands that deal with working tree files try to remove a
directory that becomes empty (i.e. "git switch" from a branch that
has the directory to another branch that does not would attempt
remove all files in the directory and the directory itself). This
drops users into an unfamiliar situation if the command was run in
a subdirectory that becomes subject to removal due to the command.
The commands have been taught to keep an empty directory if it is
the directory they were started in to avoid surprising users.

default, which no longer is the case. This has been corrected.

I've got a re-roll which I think is almost ready but feel free to drop
it in the meantime.

Dscho spotted a typo which I was going to correct with a re-roll but
I've been holding off in case he has time to read the rest of the series.

Best Wishes

I'll mark it as expecting a reroll then.

Likewise.

Thanks for these updates, which are greatly appreciated.

The output from the same command to summarize the current draft of
the next issue of the "What's cooking" report looks like this. As
promised, unless a problem is found in it, a topic in 'next' will
graduate almost automatically to 'master' after spending a week
there, so by the end of this week we'll have ~40 topics graduating
to 'master'.

Please pay extra attention to the list of topics slated for 'next'
(with and without the '?') to stop topics that are not quite ready
to go in to 'next' by mistake.

Thanks.

Expecting a reroll.

I agree this is ready. Some additional discussion is in the thread,
but it is all about how to build upon this fix.

I've been meaning to get back to this one. I'll see what I can do
today.

I do plan to re-roll, but with all of the movement in vd/sparse-reset
and ld/sparse-diff-blame, I paused work on this. As those topics
become more stable, I will revisit this and the comments that are
still outstanding.

I have another sparse index topic [1] that came out _after_ this
cooking email that is higher priority, since it fixes a bug.

I found this output to be a particularly interesting way to get an
overview of everything going on. It almost looks appropriate for
being a "table of contents" for the main report. Have you thought
about adding it near the top of that report?

Thanks,

This was primarily designed to help guide me decide what topics to
merge to 'next' in what order, and it is pretty much a grep in the
main part of the report that duplicates what is already said down
there. With the number of topics in the report, it may not be very
useful as a ToC, and while I do not mind adding one every time I
send out a new issue of the report, I do not know how it affects
readers to drown them by this list-of-topics at the top.

Another thing that is different in this and upcoming issue of the
report is that I tried to track down the "source" of each topic, so
that it becomes easy to go to a single web page I can view the
discussion on the topic by appending "source:" message ID after
https://lore.kernel.org/git/. I am still not sure how sustainable
to keep doing this "source:" annotation (it is automated somewhat,
but needs manual sanity checks), so I won't promise keeping it in
the future, though. At least, not yet.

Thanks.

I would have loved to give this a much more in-depth review, but the days
have become short on the North hemisphere, haven't they.

In any case, the patch series looks good to me (personally, I do not care
so much about typos as long as they aren't indicator of sloppiness, which
in this case they aren't, I find your patches really well done).

Thanks,
Dscho

I am puzzled. What does the length of a day have anything to do with
anything in this age?

Thanks for an ack. It's Phillip's turn to react ;-)

Thanks, both.

I know, it felt like it never got light here yesterday.

I've just posted v5 with the typo fixed, thanks for your comments.
