* rounding error in status VU, elsewhere?

During mono playback, the text VU sometimes looks like this:

[-=====|===== ]

as if the output channels have different levels.  Although this might
be a minor display issue confined to display_status(), it raises the
concern that something might be going terribly wrong inside the
effects chain.  At a glance, sox rarely manages the rounding mode.
When it does, should it always round toward +inf, instead of toward
zero or even?  Is there a more severe instance of implicit rounding?

Please can you supply the command line you are using when you see this, along with corresponding output when invoking with -V.

Can you please put the mono file somewhere for download,
or at least show the full output of 'play -V file'
