SI で m が milli なのはそういうものでしょう。

むずかしいのは micro で、SI では (u ではなく) μ です。
ただ調べてみると、u にするという話は見つかります。
Wikipedia にも書いてあって、ISO 2955 などが参照されています。

ただ、ISO 2955 は廃止されちゃったのか withdrawn になっています。
