Or, more concisely:

    skip_prefix(refname, "refs/tags/", &refname) ||
    skip_prefix(refname, "refs/heads/", &refname) ||
    skip_prefix(refname, "refs/remotes/", &refname);

since || short-circuits. No need for the 'if' or cascading 'else if's.
