Hi everyone,

It looks like there will be no Git conference or Git developer meeting
this year.

Anyway, next year Git will be 10 years old and it would be nice if
something could be organized.

A few week ago, I was at the LinuxCon North America in Chicago [1]. I
love going to a LinuxCon and giving a presentation there. It was my
4th LinuxCon (2 in Europe and 2 in North America) and they are always
very well organized. They also often host other open source/free
software conferences like for Mesos [2] or Gstreamer [3].

So I wonder if we could officially ask if they could host and help
organize a Git conference next year.

In fact I already discussed this with a few of the LinuxFoundation
people at the LinuxCon and they looked happy with that. I also talked
with a few Github guys there who were also happy with that.

Github was a gold sponsor of the LinuxCon as well as Google [1], and
Atlassian was a platinum sponsor of the co-located MesosCon [2]. So it
looks like many companies involved with Git like the LinuxFoundation
and already collaborate with it.

At the LinuxCon they said that the next LinuxCon North America is
planned for August 2015 in Seattle. Seattle is a not very far away
from were Junio, Shawn and Linus live, and Linus usually comes to the
LinuxCon North America, so I suppose that it would not be a big burden
for them to come if they want to.

As many Linux kernel developers have been contributing to Git,
especially at the beginning, which was very important for the success
of Git, I think it would be nice if some of them could easily take
part of a Git conference where we would celebrate the 10th anniversary
of Git.

To sum up it would be a very nice common ground for both companies and
developers, and it would be much easier to organize with the great
help and experience of the LinuxFoundation.

Best,
Christian.

Hi Chris,
Seattle is a very inconvenient location for most of the people coming from Europe: somewhere in the Bay area would be better and less expensive for us.

Luca.

Well, the fact that Seattle is inconvnient might not matter that much
because apparently large numbers of Europeans are on vacation in
August, and some of them are already complaining that the Plumbers
Conference is going to be colocated with LinuxCon in Seattle. :-)

The Linux Foundation will be hosting its Collaboration Summit (which
is like LinuxCon, but which is invitation only to members of
developers community and LF members) in at the Hyatt Santa Rosa August
21-25. Folks would fly in to San Fracisco, but then you would need to
get up to the Napa Valley, which means renting a car or taking a bus
up to Santa Rosa. So that's a bit of a disadvantage, but once you get
up there, it's quite nice.

If this is something that folks are interested in, I work with Angela
pretty closely, since I organize the Kernel Summit, so I'm happy to
put folks in touch with her. But before I do that, I have one other
question. Has the Git conference/meeting outgrown Google's
facilities? Is that an option?

Cheers,

						- Ted

GitTogether has been hosted at Google's for quite some time :-)
Last one was in 2011 http://google-opensource.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/gittogether-2011.html

It would be nice to have a joint conference again in the Bay Area.

P.S. Possibly you heard of the global crisis in Europe ... that means nobody goes on holiday for a whole month in August anymore ;-( Saving money is more the focus rather than spending it on holidays ;-)

Luca.

Oops, sorry, I meant to say April 21-25; hence four months earlier
than August, avoiding the European vacation season, and also requiring
a flight into SFO.

I am ok with having the GitCon at Hyatt Santa Rosa around April 21-25
if people prefer or if it makes it easier for the LinuxFoundation.

It's true that it can be cheaper for Europeans as it may be easier to
find a free place to crash at (hi John!)
And April 21-25 is closer to the anniversary date. On the other hand
there might be fewer people around because the Collaboration Summit is
invitation only.

As far as I know, the big problem with using Google's facilities is
that someone working for Google needs to be involved and spend a lot
of time talking and organizing things with other Google people. And
unfortunately the Git developers working for Google are usually very
busy with other things like working on what they are supposed to work
at Google. Shawn used to organize the GitTogether meetings, but he has
been involved in Gerrit during the last years and therefore cannot do
it anymore.

That's why IMHO our best option is to have things organized by the
LinuxFoundation.

We could also ask Github to organize everything as for the Git merge
2013, but there are other benefits to the LinuxFoundation. It is a
neutral organization that is used to dealing with competing companies,
and as it could colocate us with a linux kernel meeting it would make
it easier for some kernel developers to come.

Best,
Christian.

I think he was really referring to airfare. SFO is a major US airport
with decent direct route coverage to major sections of Europe. I think
getting to Seattle often requires landing at JFK or Dulles or SFO and
then connecting with a US domestic flight. That adds significant
travel time and cost to any trip.

I don't think we have outgrown Google's facilities, but I could be
wrong. We can usually accommodate about 150 people for an event if we
plan ahead for it. We just can't surprise the catering folks with a
large same day food order. :)

But yes, I have been busy with $DAY_JOB and that has cut back on my
time for community event planning.

I hadn't realized Git is turning 10 next year. Just been too busy
using Git to pay attention to its upcoming anniversary. Let me talk to
some folks at Google and see if we can organize something here in
Mountain View, or help the LinuxFoundation sponsor something.

Christian mentioned that he talked to some GitHub folks at LinuxCon.
Those folks have also started thinking about things. :)

Things are still very tentative at this point, but I think they are
considering something like the Git Merge conference we did earlier, and
doing it in June in Europe (maybe Paris). I know they were going to
reach out to Linux Foundation folks to try to jointly plan something,
but I don't know if that has happened yet.

So it seems there are a lot of different people who are all potentially
interested in planning or taking part, and they should all be talking to
each other. :)

It would be nice however for the 10th anniversary having a new "Git-Together" again as the old times at Google's in Mountain View CA.
Paris however is an attractive option for me personally (2h train from my doorstep), better than Seattle for sure ;-)

Luca.

Did you talk to some folks?

Could you ask if they talked to Linux Foundation folks?

It would be very easy for me to come if it was in Paris, but I'd
rather make it easy for Junio, Linus, you guys, and other
contributors, unless everyone wants to take advantage of the
conference to visit Paris :-)

Maybe we should have a mailing list for that.

Thanks,
Christian.

I've just asked; I'll let you know if I hear.

I've seen LF folks mentioned a few times in this thread. Are there
specific people (with email addresses) that I should be pointing them
at?
