autopoint: ... gettext-0.20 ... is too old

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to test Gnulib according to
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnulib/2017-05/msg00117.html.

I've cloned the latest Gnulib. I'm running this command:

GNULIB_DIR=gnulib
GNULIB_TEST_DIR=gnulib_test

git clone ...
cd "$GNULIB_DIR"

if ! ./gnulib-tool --create-testdir --dir=../"$GNULIB_TEST_DIR"
--single-configure;
then
    echo "Failed to copy Gnulib sources"
    exit 1
fi

The command fails with the error message:

  ...
  top/GNUmakefile
  top/README-release
  top/maint.mk
executing autopoint --force
autopoint: *** The AM_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION declaration in your configure.ac
               file requires the infrastructure from gettext-0.20 but
this version
               is older. Please upgrade to gettext-0.20 or newer.
autopoint: *** Stop.
Failed to copy Gnulib sources

I have updated libraries located at $HOME/tmp/ubsan/lib/. They include
the warez from GetText 0.20.1. But I'm not at the point I can tell
Gnulib where to find the updated libraries (using PKG_CONFIG_PATH).

Running 'gnulib-tool --help' does not appear to offer a way to tell
the tool where to find the updated libraries.

How do I work around the issue?

It's complaining that the 'autopoint' program in $PATH is too old.

Try excluding the module 'gettext' (which is marked obsolete) from
your tests:

./gnulib-tool --create-testdir --dir=../"$GNULIB_TEST_DIR" --avoid=gettext --single-configure

If that does not fix it, install GNU gettext 0.20.1 from source
with a --prefix=PREFIX, and add PREFIX/bin to your PATH.
