The Xapian SWIG bindings are favored by Xapian upstream for
ease-of-maintenance compared to the XS version. While Debian
lags on this front, the SWIG bindings are widely available
on all *BSDs.

I favor leaving the publicinbox.<name>.indexlevel parameter
out of config files to make it easier to alter and reduce
sources of truth. It worked well in most cases, but
public-inbox-watch also needs to detect the indexlevel.
Moving the sub to InboxWritable (from Admin) probably makes
sense since it's a per-inbox attribute and allows -watch
to reuse it.

This enables Xapian::DB_DANGEROUS to support in-place updates.
This can speed up the initial index and reduce I/O at the cost
of preventing concurrent readers and being unsafe in the face of
any abnormal terminations. This is more dangerous than
--no-fsync. --no-fsync is only unsafe in the event of a power
loss or kernel crash; --dangerous is unsafe even on SIGKILL.

This lets administrators reindex specific time ranges
according to git "approxidate" formats. These arguments
are passed directly to underlying git-log(1) invocations
and may still reach into old epochs.
Since these options rely on git committer dates (which we infer
from the most recent Received: header), they are not guaranteed
to be strictly tied to git history and it's possible to
over/under-reindex some messages. It's probably not a major
problem in practice, though; reindexing a few extra messages
is generally harmless aside from some extra device wear.
Since this currently relies on git-log, these options do not
affect -extindex, yet.

Because make(1), git(1), tar(1) all support -C in this form, as
do our newer commands such as lei, public-inbox-{clone,fetch}.
|

The underscore variant was never documented and maintaining
the difference between the command-line and internal hash
is not worth it.
|
|

config.mak

extindex users will likely want to use indexlevel=basic for
per-inbox indices, however extindex itself doesn't support basic
index level (yet?). Let's ensure we don't trip up extindex
users who specify "-L basic" on the -index command-line.

Negation in flag names are confusing, but trying to deviate from
the DB_NO_SYNC name used by Xapian is also confusing.
|
|
We'll count the number of log changes (regardless of index or
unindex) and only attach inboxes to ExtSearchIdx objects when
they get new work. We'll also reduce lock bouncing and only
update external indices after all per-inbox indexing is done.
This also updates existing v2 indexing/unindexing callers
to be more consistent and ensures unindex log entries update
per-inbox last commit information.

These options make no sense when used together, just inform the
user and move on since it's probably harmless to continue.
|

Note: I'm not sure if it's worth documenting and supporting this
long-term.
We can can avoid taking locks for invocations of "index --all"
and rely on high-resolution ctime (struct timespec st_ctim)
comparisons of msgmap.sqlite3 and the packed-refs + refs/heads
directory of the newest epoch.
This cuts public-inbox-index invocations with
"--all --no-update-extindex -L basic" down from 0.92s to 0.31s.
The change with "-L medium" or "-L full" and (default) non-zero
jobs is even more drastic, reducing a 12-13s no-op invocation
down to the same 0.31s

In most cases, this ensures users will only have to opt-in to
using -extindex once and won't have to issue extra commands
to keep external indices up-to-date when using
public-inbox-index.
Since we support arbitrary numbers of external indices for
ease-of-development, we'll support repeating "-E"
("--update-extindex=") in case users want to test changes in
parallel.

At least not for resolving inboxes, since there's no good way
for a user to specify what is an inbox or extindex directory
without a command-line switch.
Instead of changing the -extindex command, we change the -index
command internals to rely on the new {-use_cwd} flag to avoid
internal use of negation, since double-negatives and the like
are confusing to me.
|
|
v1 and v2 inbox indexing now supports graceful shutdown checks
just like ExtSearchIdx. Additionally, we'll consistently
perform quit checks at the top of loops for consistency.
Interaction with the --xapian-only and --sequential-shard
options are a bit lacking, and will warn the user to use
"--reindex --xapian-only" to fix.

This doesn't do anything, yet, but it will once the rest
of the eindex stuff works.
|
|
`-h' doesn't conflict with anything, and some users (including
git users) may be more accustomed to using it rather than the
rarely-seen-outside-of-Getopt::Long `-?' switch.
We can also rely on the GetOptions() function to emit a proper
error message instead of just "bad command-line args".

|
Otherwise, users may be frustrated to discover it missing
a long indexing run.
|
|
Since we no longer read document data from Xapian, allow users
to opt-out of storing it.
This breaks compatibility with previous releases of
public-inbox, but gives us a ~1.5% space savings on Xapian
storage (and associated I/O and page cache pressure reduction).
|
|
For -index, this is a convenient way to quickly index all
inboxes after a grok-pull. Might as well support it for
rarely used commands like -compact and -xcpdb, too.
|
|
Converting v1 inboxes from v2 can be a painful experience
on HDD. Some of the new options in the CLI or config
file make it less painful.
|
|
Move away from hard-to-read alllowercase naming and favor
snake_case or separated-by-dashes.
We'll keep `--indexlevel' as-is for now, since it's been around
for several releases; but we'll support `--index-level' in the
CLI and update our documentation in a few months.
We'll also clarify that publicInbox.indexMaxSize is only
intended for -index, and not -watch or -mda.

This to avoid user error of a currently undocumented switch;
since --xapian-only always goes through the full history at
the moment.

Eventually, commonly-used commands run by the user will all
support --help / -? for user-friendliness. The changes from
up-front `use' to lazy `require' speed up `--help' by 3x or so.
|
|
If XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD is unset, Xapian will default to
10000. That limits the effectiveness of users specifying
extremely large values of --batch-size.
While we're at it, localize the changes to globals since -index
may be eval-ed in tests (and perhaps production code in the
future).

Since the --compact switch works on Xapian shards,
it makes sense that --sequential-shard affects our
usage of xapian-compact(1).
|
|
We'll continue supporting `--no-sync' even if its yet-to-make it
it into a release, but the term `sync' is overloaded in our
codebase which may be confusing to new hackers and users.
None of our our code nor dependencies issue the sync(2) syscall,
either, only fsync(2) and fdatasync(2).
|
|
This is useful for speeding up indexing runs when only Xapian
rules change but SQLite indexing doesn't change. This mostly
implies `--reindex', but does NOT pick up new messages (because
SQLite indexing needs to occur for that).
I'm leaving this undocumented in the manpage for now since it's
mainly to speed up development and testing. Users upgrading to
1.6.0 will be advised to `--reindex --rethread', anyways, due to
the threading improvements since 1.1.0-pre1.
It may make sense to document for 1.7+ when there's Xapian-only
indexing changes, though.

This gives better page cache utilization for Xapian indexing on
slow storage by improving locality for random I/O activity on
the Xapian DB.
Instead of doing a single-pass to index both SQLite and Xapian;
this indexes them separately. The first pass is identical to
indexlevel=basic: it indexes both over.sqlite3 and msgmap.sqlite3.
Subsequent passes only operate on a single Xapian shard for
documents belonging to that shard. Given enough shards, each
individual shard can be made small enough to fit into the kernel
page cache and avoid HDD seeks for read activity.
Doing rough tests with a busy system with a 7200 RPM HDD with ext4,
full indexing of LKML (9 epochs) goes from ~80 hours (-j0) to
~30 hours (-j8) with 16GB RAM with 7 shards configured and fsync(2)
disabled (--no-sync) and `--batch-size=10m'.

And -compact supports --jobs=0 like -index to disable parallel
execution. Running three xapian-compact processes in parallel
on a USB 2.0 HDD is pretty painful.
|
|
This allows us to speed up indexing operations to SQLite
and Xapian.
Unfortunately, it doesn't affect operations using
`xapian-compact' and the compactor API, since that doesn't seem
to support Xapian::DB_NO_SYNC, yet.
|
|
Older versions of public-inbox < 1.3.0 had subtly
different semantics around threading in some corner
cases. This switch (when combined with --reindex)
allows us to fix them by regenerating associations.
|
|
InboxWritable should only set $v2w->{parallel} if the $parallel
flag is defined to 0 or 1. We want indexing a new inbox to
utilize SMP, just like --reindex.
-index once again allows -j0/--jobs=0 to force single-process
use, and we'll be ensuring that works in tests to maintain
performance on small systems.

On powerful systems, having this option is preferable to
XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD due to lock granularity and contention
with other processes (-learn, -mda, -watch).
Setting XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD can cause -learn, -mda, and
-watch to get stuck until an epoch is completely processed.

In normal mail paths, we can rely on MTAs being configured with
reasonable limits in the -watch and -mda mail injection paths.
However, the MTA is bypassed in a git-only delivery path, a BOFH
could inject a large message and DoS users attempting to mirror
a public-inbox.
This doesn't protect unindexed WWW interfaces from Email::MIME
memory explosions on v1 inboxes. Probably nobody cares about
unindexed WWW interfaces anymore, especially now that Xapian is
optional for indexing.

It's more convenient to specify `-c' / `--compact' on the
command-line when reindexing than it is to invoke
public-inbox-compact(1) separately.
This is especially convenient in low-space situations when
public-inbox-index is operating on multiple inboxes
sequentially, as compaction can happen immediately after
indexing each inbox, instead of waiting until all inboxes are
indexed.

Since v2 inboxes contain multiple git repositories, avoid the
use of the word "repository" when referring to inboxes as a
whole in most places.
|

Avoid 'Variable "%s" will not stay shared' warnings
when the contents of this script eval'ed into a sub.

InboxWritable caching the result of ->importer leads to a
circular references with returned (V2Writable|Import) object
holds onto the calling InboxWritable object.
With public-inbox-watch, this leads to a memory leak if a user
is reloading via SIGHUP after a message is imported (it would
only become noticeable with SIGHUPs after every message imported).
I would not expect anybody to to notice this in real-world
usage. I only noticed this since I was making -xcpdb suitable
for long-lived process use (e.g. "mod_perl style") and a flock
remained unreleased on v1 inboxes after resharding.
WatchMaildir (used by -watch) already handles caching of the
importer object itself, and all of our other real-world uses of
->importer are short-lived or designed for batch scripts, so
there's no need to cache the importer result internally.

And use it from Admin.
It's easy to tell what indexlevel=basic is from unconfigured
inboxes, but distinguishing between 'medium' and 'full' would
require stat()-ing position.* files which is fragile and
Xapian-implementation-dependent.
So use the metadata facility of Xapian and store it in the main
partition so Admin tools can deal better with unconfigured
inboxes copied using generic tools like cp(1) or rsync(1).

It's annoying for people using "git fetch && public-inbox-index"
as one user; and running -httpd/-nntpd as a different user
(where users see different config files).
|
|
It doesn't implement progress of batches, yet, but it wires
up the parsing of the command-line while preserving output
compatibility.
This output is NOT meant to be stable.
|
|
-index documentation avoid redundant v1 information and refers
readers to apropriate v1/v2 manpages. Search::Xapian can also
be optional, now, as only the PSGI search interface uses it.
Favor "INBOX_DIR" where appropriate, since "REPO_DIR" can be
confused for code repos which we also support.
XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD is documented for all relevant
bulk commands.

Both of these index-affecting commands should work similarly
on the command-line.
public-inbox-index no longer complains about unconfigured
~/.public-inbox/config; but often I found myself being
annoyed by that, anyways...

Since we lazy-load Xapian now, some errors may become
more cryptic or buried. Try to improve that by making
Admin show better errors.

More tests work without Search::Xapian, now.
Usability issues still need to be fixed

Avoiding reliance on environment variables is a bit cleaner
for writing tests
|

This can help users track down the source of warnings
when presented with imperfect emails.
While we're at it, make the __WARN__ callback in t/v2writable.t
a no-op since we don't check for warnings, there.
