Hi All,

I am looking for a good Free/Libre mark down editor and reader as I am interested in blogging on a site that requires one.

Does anyone have a particular Favourite program?

Also, Ubuntu 16.04 and MacOS High Sierra are the Operating Environments I would like to run the software on.

Kind Regards,

I can commend Emacs in markdown mode.

It will tick all the checkboxes in your query (yes, it can render
markdown
into HTML via `markdown`), and many more. One editor to rule them all.

GNU Emacs is an obvious choice. The learning curve is not insignificant, but with a defined goal in mind, it is not insurmountable.

And once mastered, you never need to pause again for: "looking for a good Free/Libre ... editor and reader" because you have the best already.

In my experience, Emacs's Markdown mode is the only thing that makes it
bearable to write Markdown.

This one looks interesting too. I'll try it out in my copious free
time, or perhaps next time I'm faced with a mountain of Markdown
documents to write.

Also, it's good to see that it integrates with Pandoc. This is a
fantastic tool. I depend on it heavily.

I usually don't write outside of the software of a website I am posting
to. I prefer DokuWiki syntax to Markdown so writing a draft on a
DokuWiki site makes sense for me.

What software do you plan to blog with?

Hi All,

1. Ikiwiki blogging software uses markdown for its messages. It allows to store markdown on the file system and commit it via git. I find it an attractive option.

2. Markdown may be edited via many editors that have syntax highlighting, such as emacs. emacs's markdown and muse modes may be of interest.

3. When choosing what editor to use, it needs to be free software and also be consistent with the environment that I am using. (For instance, KDE users may wish to use Kate and KDevelop.)
Andri Effendi, What environment are you using?

Regards,
Svetlana

I use emacs in markdown mode for editing, then to see the html
conversion, i use a bash function to open it in the browser. It doesn't
have all the css etc of the final form, but it's good enough.

mdt() {
  markdown "$1" >/tmp/mdtest.html
  firefox /tmp/mdtest.html
}

Since the design of Markdown (and reStructuredText too) is to make the
markup as unobtrusive as possible it by design tries to avoid the need
of any special editors for it. It's pretty much what you see is what
you get when looking at the plain text version of it.

I just edit the plaintext of Markdown directly. I use the basic
text-mode of emacs for editing it as plain text with nothing otherwise
special.

Bob
