OK.  That raises my hopes up that we may be able to simplify things
like this

    config-list.h:
            $(QUIET_GEN)$(SHELL_PATH) ./generate-configlist.sh \
                    >$@+ && mv $@+ $@

into

    config-list.h:
            $(QUIET_GEN)$(SHELL_PATH) ./generate-configlist.sh >$@
