Hi everyone,

GSoC Org Applications open next week on Monday, January 23rd at 1800
UTC and close on Tuesday, February 7th at 1800 UTC.

I am interested in mentoring and being an org admin for Git again this
year, so I plan to apply for Git soon.

The GSoC contributor application deadline is April 4 - 18:00 UTC, so
(co-)mentors and org admins are already welcome to volunteer. We also
need project ideas to refresh our idea page from last year
(https://git.github.io/SoC-2022-Ideas/).

There will be a GSoC Meetup in Brussels during FOSDEM weekend on
Saturday, February 4th in the evening. I won't be there but if you are
around, interested and haven't received the link to register directly
from Google, let me know so I can send it to you.

Best,
Christian.

I would be glad to help as an Org admin this year. I don't suppose I
have the capacity to mentor / co-mentor this year, though. I could very
well help as much as I can passively where needed.

One thing to note about the Org application. As per Google's claim we
should be able to complete this year's application quickly since the new
webapp allows us to reuse last year's application details. To quote Google,

If your org applied to GSoC in 2022 your Org Admin will have a very
quick and easy 2023 application. : ) As mentioned last year, the
webapp is now evergreen so if your org applied in 2022 all of the
information for the org application is still in the system so the Org
Admin will have a couple of quick steps to follow during the
   application window.

Do feel free to let me know if it works otherwise, Christian. I'll be
glad to look into it.

We certainly are in need of ideas and mentors for this year. Do chime in
with your thoughts. :-)

You are welcome to be an Org Admin, thanks!

Actually you were already an Org Admin last year and it looks like
they didn't remove people from the roles they had last year, so you
are still an Org Admin.

> One thing to note about the Org application. As per Google's claim we

Yeah, I just did it and reusing last year's application details was
quite quick. One needs to read, agree on and accept 3 long documents,
and they still ask a few questions about last year's GSoC though.

They also want an URL with an idea list, so I quickly copied and
edited last year's idea list into this one:

https://git.github.io/SoC-2023-Ideas/

I removed the "Reachability bitmap improvements" idea but left the 2 others:

  - More Sparse Index Integrations (I removed `git mv` in the list of
commands that need to be improved though)
  - Unify ref-filter formats with other pretty formats

On both of them I removed all possible mentors except me though. They
are welcome to tell me that they should be added back.

Yeah, sure.

I think that puts me in the same boat, though I can't remember if I am
actually an org admin or not. If I'm not, and you folks need some extra
help, I'm happy to participate.

I am going to pass on mentoring this year, though. It was a fun
experience for me last time, but took more time than I had planned for.
If someone needs or wants a co-mentor, though, I'm happy to help there
as I think it will end up taking less time.

Thanks,
Taylor

I'm positive that I'll be available by the time the GSoC contribution
officially starts.
You can add me back to "Unify ref-filter formats with other pretty formats".
I would be happy to co-mentor it with you.

After mulling it over, I'd like to sign up as a mentor again this year for
"More Sparse Index Integrations" - feel free to add me back to the
application. AFAIK I'd be solo-mentoring for this project (although I'm
happy to work with a co-mentor if anyone's interested!).

Thanks!

Thank you for volunteering. I've added you back as a possible mentor for

Taylor,
Since you expressed interest to be a co-mentor, would you be willing to
co-mentor the project with Victoria ?

Thanks for thinking of me. I think that Victoria's got this area more
than covered herself, so I'd rather see here solo this one, if that's
OK.

So Git has been accepted to participate in GSoC 2023.

I have recently received emails with "GSoC 2023: Be sure to add Org
Admins ASAP (and Mentors too!)" as a subject. Unfortunately despite
trying several times I haven't been able to do that. There have been
emails saying that a bug was fixed, but it seems to me that there are
several bugs left preventing us to do what we are asked to.

On Firefox I cannot even log into the website. On Chromium the "Add
member" drop down list doesn't show any member that I can add despite
the fact that many people are shows in
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/git/members

Today is supposed to be the deadline for each project to have at least
2 Org Admins for GSoC 2023, but it looks like I am the only one and
cannot add a second one because of the bugs.

I have emailed gsoc-support@google.com to get support and will see what happens.

Let me know if you have ideas about this.

We still have time to add project ideas to
https://git.github.io/SoC-2023-Ideas/ and it's still possible for
(co-)mentors to volunteer. For example perhaps someone could co-mentor
the "More Sparse Index Integrations" project along with Victoria.

A project idea that was discussed in the past was about improving the
git-scm website and perhaps removing the Heroku dependency.

Best,
Christian.

I thought I was already in as an Org Admin but I somehow have missed completing the process. Sorry about that.

The thing is potential mentors need to login to the GSoC portal and accept org member agreement and program rules. After you (or any Org Admin) should be able to add that person to the program. Here's the relevant snippet from Google's mail:

-- 8< --
Trying to invite Mentor and Org Admins from GSoC 2022 to the GSoC 2023 program?

If a person was a Mentor or Org Admin for your org in 2022 then they just need to log in to g.co/gsoc and click on the 2023 bar which will show them the 2023 Program Rules and Org Member agreement that they need to read and agree to. Once they have done that they will appear in the Org Admin's dropdown of folks to add to the 2023 program.

-- >8 --

Hope this helps.

Victoria and Hariom,

Do kindly log into the portal and complete the process and let us know. Once that's done, we'll add you as mentors to the 2023 GSoC program.

Thanks for the quick action, both! I've added you as mentors to the program. You should've received a mail regarding it. Let me know if you haven't.

For now, that's all that you had to do. Our next action at GSoC portal is likely needed only after the application period starts (March 20). So, there's still time for that.

Here's a link to the timeline for reference:
