Nit: It might be a bit easier to see what this conditional is checking
if it is closer to the code which sets 'ret'. Perhaps either:

    char buf[1];
    int i, ret = ...;

    if (ret < 0)

or:

    char buf[1];
    int i, ret;

    ret = ...;
    if (ret < 0)
