I notice deadlines are approaching for Git to apply for GSoC (Feb 5th)
and for Outreachy (Feb 18th), though we still have some time. Do mentors
have sufficient bandwidth for us to participate?

If there is funding for Outreachy, I am willing to mentor one person.

I am willing to mentor or co-mentor someone for GSoC.

(Sorry about replying only to Peff previously.)

I also just added the following file, made from SoC-2019-Ideas.md:

https://github.com/git/git.github.io/blob/master/General-Application-Information.md

As with https://github.com/git/git.github.io/blob/master/General-Microproject-Information.md
the idea is to not have separate documents for each year and each
program (GSoC or Outreachy), but rather point people to the same
document that we should update regularly.

Thanks,
Christian.

While at it, I just applied on behalf of Git to the GSoC 2020 and I
sent invite to possible Organization Administrators. I am one of the
admins already but we need another person to accept the invite before
tomorrow as they require at least 2 admins. This is the only thing
left we need to apply.

The information I used to apply is in:
https://git.github.io/SoC-2020-Org-Application/

Thanks,
Christian.

By the way if you have not received an invite but would like to be an
org admin (which requires very little work if any) please let me know.

Thanks,
Christian.

Thanks!

For some time I have been thinking about trying to get more former
GSoC students and Outreachy interns helping us with mentoring. Here is
a pull request that could help, but I would be happy to get opinion
before merging it:

https://github.com/git/git.github.io/pull/414

(It adds a note about giving back and mentoring to
https://github.com/git/git.github.io/blob/master/General-Application-Information.md)

Best,
Christian.

So Git just got accepted into GSoC 2020, and is listed there:

https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/

Emily and Jonathan, If we participate in both GSoC and Outreachy this
summer, I think it's better if we share as much as possible, so I
would suggest we just create a "Summer-2020-Microprojects.md" and a
"Summer-2020-Ideas.md" that are common to both GSoC and Outreachy.

So I am planning to rename "SoC-2020-Ideas.md" into
"Summer-2020-Ideas.md". I will also create a mostly dummy
"Summer-2020-Microprojects.md" that we can fill up with micro project
ideas.

In the future we can perhaps continue this way by creating
"Winter-2021-Microprojects.md" and a "Winter-2021-Ideas.md" for the
next Winter Outreachy round if we participate?

Hi Christian,

I'd be happy to co-mentor an Outreachy intern with an experienced
mentor, hope I'm not too late.
If so, please guide me on the steps required to get involved.

Thanks,
Heba

Thank you for your interest in co-mentoring! It's very much appreciated!

I don't think you are late. It seems that February 25 at 4pm UTC is
the deadline for project submission.

> If so, please guide me on the steps required to get involved.

Earlier in this thread Dscho (Johannes Schindelin) said he would be ok
to mentor someone for Outreachy, so I think, if he is still
interested, he would be the best person to guide you on the steps
required to get involved, and perhaps he could co-mentor with you.

I am planning to mentor a GSoC student this Summer, not an Outreachy
intern, and I think it would simplify things for me if I am not
involved in both programs. But let's see what Dscho says.

Best,
Christian.

I think it is too late. That's the deadline for mentor project
submission, but the signup for orgs was Feb 18th.

Hi Peff,

You're right, but they mentioned on the website that Feb 18th is for
new communities who haven't participated before. I double checked with
the Outreachy organizers and they can still add Git if there's funding
and a mentor is interested.

I'm happy to help and co-mentor on any of the two programs.

OK. It's a bit tight to line up funding, but we might be able to make it
work. The big question is: do we have a mentor with a proposed project?

Dscho mentioned a willingness to mentor, but I don't know if he's got a
project proposal ready.

Great! Hopefully someone (perhaps Dscho) will be willing to co-mentor
an Outreachy intern with you, otherwise I will be happy to co-mentor a
GSoC student with you.

Thanks,
Christian.

I would be willing to co-mentor, but I have no good project lined up, so
it feels a bit rushed to me. Maybe take it easy and apply this fall?

I think I'll co-mentor with Christian then :)

Just to be clear: you mean on GSoC, or trying to get something together
for Outreachy?

First I should have talked to Dscho above, not Emily and Jonathan,
sorry for the confusion.

As it looks like we will only participate in the GSoC this Summer and
no one replied to the above proposal, I just created:

https://git.github.io/SoC-2020-Microprojects/

It only contains things from the previous year
(https://git.github.io/SoC-2019-Microprojects/) for now.

I am of course open to any suggestion about things that could be
included or things that should be removed.

Thanks,
Christian.

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to keep pursuing
funding for this Outreachy round.
