The "remote tracking branches" are the refs in the refs/remote= s/ hierarchy. The "tracking branches" are your own local branches that you have created with 'git branch topic thatremote/topic' (or perhaps 'git checkout -b'). The paragraph talks about the latter. -- Hannes
