Subject: [PATCH 28/34] commit-graph: write Modified Path Bloom Filter Merge Index chunk
Date: Fri, 29 May 2020 10:50:32 +0200	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <20200529085038.26008-29-szeder.dev@gmail.com> (raw)
In-Reply-To: <20200529085038.26008-1-szeder.dev@gmail.com>

[Explain!]

The table below compares the runtime of

  git rev-list --full-history HEAD -- "$path"

with modified path Bloom filters for only first parents and with all
parents of merge commits for 5000+ randomly selected paths from each
repository. It also shows the size increase of the commit-graph file:

                          | Average runtime | commit-graph file size
                          | |
Percentage | first all | first all
of merge | parent merge Average | parent merge Size
commits | only parents speedup | only parents increase

Storing modified path Bloom filters for all parents of merge commits
significantly increases the size of the Modified Path Bloom Filters
chunk, though when looking at the size of the whole commit-graph file
the relative increase is sometimes not that much. FWIW, the average
speedup in most cases (except android-base and linux) is higher than
the size increase of the commit-graph file.

Beware! To create a Bloom filter from the paths modified between a
commit and one of its parents, it seems natural to extend
create_modified_path_bloom_filter() with a 'struct commit *parent'
parameter... and then things would blow up when encountering commit
a733a5da97b2 (Merge branches 'release' and 'fluff' into release,
2008-02-07) in linux.git:

  $ git -C linux.git log -1 a733a5da97b2 |head -n2
  commit a733a5da97b238e3e3167d3d0aee8fe1e8d04e97
  Merge: 299cfe38081b 299cfe38081b 9e52797131e8

Notice how the same commit is both the first _and_ second parent! So
extend create_modified_path_bloom_filter()'s signature with the int
index of the particular parent.
