There have been no code changes in since the last iteration. I changed
the title for the first patch since I realized that the cache is just an
implementation detail and what we are really doing is to provide a new
API for reading values from .gitmodules. I also added an extra paragraph
in the commit message explaining that fact.

The last iteration can be found here:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/270545

There is no interdiff since no code changed.

Heiko Voigt (4):
implement submodule config API for lookup of .gitmodules values
extract functions for submodule config set and lookup
use new config API for worktree configurations of submodules
do not die on error of parsing fetchrecursesubmodules option

In a superproject some commands need to interact with submodules. They
need to query values from the .gitmodules file either from the worktree
of from certain revisions. At the moment this is quite hard since a
caller would need to read the .gitmodules file from the history and then
parse the values. We want to provide an API for this so we have one
place to get values from .gitmodules from any revision (including the
worktree).

The API is realized as a cache which allows us to lazily read
.gitmodules configurations by commit into a runtime cache which can then
be used to easily lookup values from it. Currently only the values for
path or name are stored but it can be extended for any value needed.

It is expected that .gitmodules files do not change often between
commits. Thats why we lookup the .gitmodules sha1 from a commit and then
either lookup an already parsed configuration or parse and cache an
unknown one for each sha1. The cache is lazily build on demand for each
requested commit.

This cache can be used for all purposes which need knowledge about
submodule configurations. Example use cases are:

 * Recursive submodule checkout needs to lookup a submodule name from
its path when a submodule first appears. This needs be done before
this configuration exists in the worktree.

 * The implementation of submodule support for 'git archive' needs to
lookup the submodule name to generate the archive when given a
revision that is not checked out.

 * 'git fetch' when given the --recurse-submodules=on-demand option (or
configuration) needs to lookup submodule names by path from the
database rather than reading from the worktree. For new submodule it
needs to lookup the name from its path to allow cloning new
submodules into the .git folder so they can be checked out without
any network interaction when the user does a checkout of that
   revision.

+submodule config cache API
+==========================
+
+The submodule config cache API allows to read submodule
+configurations/information from specified revisions. Internally
+information is lazily read into a cache that is used to avoid
+unnecessary parsing of the same .gitmodule files. Lookups can be done by
+submodule path or name.
+
+Usage
+-----
+
+The caller can look up information about submodules by using the
+`submodule_from_path()` or `submodule_from_name()` functions. They return
+a `struct submodule` which contains the values. The API automatically
+initializes and allocates the needed infrastructure on-demand.
+
+If the internal cache might grow too big or when the caller is done with
+the API, all internally cached values can be freed with submodule_free().
+
+Data Structures
+---------------
+
+`struct submodule`::
+
+	This structure is used to return the information about one
+	submodule for a certain revision. It is returned by the lookup
+	functions.
+
+Functions
+---------
+
+`void submodule_free()`::
+
+	Use these to free the internally cached values.
+
+`const struct submodule *submodule_from_path(const unsigned char *commit_sha1, const char *path)`::
+
+	Lookup values for one submodule by its commit_sha1 and path or
+	name.
+
+`const struct submodule *submodule_from_name(const unsigned char *commit_sha1, const char *name)`::
+
+	The same as above but lookup by name.
+
+For an example usage see test-submodule-config.c.

This is one step towards using the new configuration API. We just
extract these functions to make replacing the actual code easier.

We remove the extracted functions and directly parse into and read out
of the cache. This allows us to have one unified way of accessing
submodule configuration values specific to single submodules. Regardless
whether we need to access a configuration from history or from the
worktree.

We should not die when reading the submodule config cache since the user
might not be able to get out of that situation when the configuration is
part of the history.

We should handle this condition later when the value is about to be
used.

I just realized that we are talking too much about .gitmodules here, where
it probably should be "submodule configuration values". For revisions we
only read from .gitmodules files but for the worktree we actually
overlay those with local configurations from .git/config and friends. Not sure
how we can name this though. "submodule configuration values" is kind of
long compared to .gitmodules.

Does anyone have a better name? Or is it maybe to confusing, to abstract
it too much and we should just keep it .gitmodules, since everyone knows
that those values can be overridden by local configuration?

Cheers Heiko

Instead of test-submodule-config.c to test this new module, it could
be useful to implement these as extensions to rev-parse:

    git rev-parse --submodule-name [<ref>:]<path>
    git rev-parse --submodule-path [<ref>:]<name>
    git rev-parse --submodule-url [<ref>:]<name>
    git rev-parse --submodule-ignore [<ref>:]<name>
    git rev-parse --submodule-recurse [<ref>:]<name>

Has this already been considered and rejected for some reason?

No that has not been considered. But I am open to it if others agree
that this is a sensible thing to do. We should be able to adapt the
existing tests right?

How does git-submodule access this information? It looks like it just
hits "git config -f .gitmodules" directly. Perhaps whatever interface is
designed should be suitable for its use here (and if there really is no
more interesting interface needed, then why is "git config" not good
enough for other callers?).

Just my two cents as an observer who does not really work on submodules.

Also, I'm not excited to see more options go into the kitchen-sink of
rev-parse, but I cannot think of a better place (I would have said "git
submodule config" or something, but that is a chicken-and-egg with the
suggestion I made above :) ).

The git-submodule script doesn't need this and is fine using plain old
"git config", as by the time it is run the .gitmodules file is already
updated in the work tree. Heiko's series is about adding infrastructure
to allow builtins like checkout and friends to access the configuration
values from the .gitmodules file of the to-be-checked-out commit when
run with "--recurse-submodules". And yes, if we want to expose this
functionality to users or scripts some day "git config" looks like the
best place to do that to me too.

Did you mean "git submodule config"?

I think he actually meant "git config" and that is already implemented.
When I implemented the infrastructure to read configurations from blobs,
Peff extended it so it will be exposed via the config command line. E.g.
you can do:

	git config --blob HEAD^^^:.gitmodules <value>

to get .gitmodules configurations from the history, so that is already
implemented. And for reading .gitmodules values we probably do not need
more, since calling git from scripting we always have new invocations of
processes anyway and that would throw away the cache I am implementing.
Reading such values via config from scripts is also more flexible since
it supports arbitrary values and my cache only specific values needed by
the builtins that use it.

My submodule config cache infrastructure is directed for C-code wanting
to query submodule values. So e.g. when "git checkout" wants to know
about values but the ".gitmodules" file that is in charge, but has not
been checked out yet. We also need this for fetch which will actually
need values from more than one revision, since we might need to merge
configurations when fetching multiple branches. Fetch also needs
information about URLs for new submodules that appear in branches, when
auto clone is switched on. That means to support the "I want to go on an
airplane get me everything I might need" use-case.

Cheers Heiko

I have reviewed the patches carefully and they look good to me.

As Git is a large project and I was active in other parts until now,
I noticed that there are subtle differences in style as when compared
to the refs code. One example would be the way comments are written.
In d378e35d256348f (Patch 1, implement submodule config API for
lookup of .gitmodules values) the comments for the data structures in
submodule-config.c seem to have a non exposed "headline" and if more
is needed proper sentences with capitalized starts and punctuation at the
end. In the refs code there are only sentences IIRC. Most of the commits
touching submodule.{c,h} do not prefix their commit message with
"submodule:"

The style is no show stopper of course, just an observation from someone
moving into a different area of code.

Thanks,
Stefan

OK, I recall there were a few iterations with review comments before
this round. Is it your impression that they have been addressed
adequately?

Do you prefer it to be rebased to a more recent 'master' before you
build your work on top of it (I think the topic currently builds on
top of v2.5.0-rc0~56)?

Thanks.
